Climate Resilience Through Stakeholder Collaboration in Bhutan

Last week marked a significant milestone for climate resilience efforts in Bhutan - a country known for its breathtaking landscapes and a commitment to community, environmental, and cultural preservation. Geoneon convened a stakeholder engagement session that was successful in charting the basis of an initiative to support the nation’s battle against climate-induced threats.

Our session brought together key participants from Bhutanese agencies, including the Department of Forest and Park Services, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, and the Department of Local Governance and Disaster Management. This diverse assembly, balanced in gender and roles - from technical experts to first responders - delved into the urgent challenges and innovative solutions needed to safeguard Bhutan's future.

Central to our discussions was the immediate need for a sophisticated climate hazard forecasting tool.

Mr. Dendup, head of the Forest Fire and Pest Management Section, encapsulated the sentiment, stating, "The tool has come at the right time," as his division was conceptualising the need for such a solution.

This acknowledgement highlights the serendipity of our engagement - bridging the gap between necessity and innovation.

Our dialogue was not just about identifying needs but also about envisioning solutions. The engagement pinpointed key data sources necessary for developing the hazard susceptibility index and the exposure index - cornerstones of our Satellite and AI-Driven Climate Resilience Tool project. Additionally, capability gaps such as early warning systems, public awareness, and technological capabilities were identified, setting a clear agenda for progress.

This stakeholder engagement is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and shared vision. By leveraging AI and Earth Observation technologies, we are forecasting climate hazards and igniting a movement towards a more resilient Bhutan.

As we embark on this journey, our collective efforts underscore a broader commitment to a sustainable future, empowered by technology and driven by community engagement.
